If you want your vehicle to be able to tow a large trailer and seat more than five people at a time, there’s only one option: a large truck-based SUV. Only a handful of automakers offer one, but one of the newest versions is the 2023 Wagoneer. Starting with the presentation in 2022, the Wagoneer is the main rival of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition.
The 2023 Wagoneer is rated to tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. This is certainly enough to tow a good recreational trailer or utility trailer. For people transportation, the Wagoneer’s three rows of seats accommodate up to eight passengers. You can also fold down the second and third rows to open up a generous 116.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The Wagoneer has respectable off-road capabilities for a large SUV. Still, you’ll need something smaller and more maneuverable for outdoor adventures.
The 2023 Wagoneer has a long list of standard active driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, lane keeps assist, rear cross-road monitoring, and rear parking sensor with automatic stop function. Available safety features include adaptive cruise control enhanced with semi-autonomous functionality, cross-collision assistance, night vision with pedestrian and animal detection, drowsiness detection, traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera view, and automated parking.

The 2023 Wagoneer boasts a spacious interior, even for rear-seat passengers. There’s also plenty of cargo space, further expanding in the Wagoneer L.
Screens dominate the interior of the 2023 Wagoneer. It has equipped the three-row SUV with a 10.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 10.3-inch lower display for driving. It also offers a rear-seat infotainment system on the Wagoneer Series II and Series II Premium, which adds two additional 10.1-inch screens to the three-row SUV. Adding up the entire screen area, you get a whopping 50.9 inches. The Wagoneer comes standard with a 10-speaker Alpine audio system but offers an available McIntosh 19-speaker premium sound system. Other standard features include navigation, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and satellite radio capability. Series II and III models get a standard wireless charging pad.
Only one engine is offered for the Wagoneer and Wagoneer L. It’s a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six that replaces the discontinued 5.7-liter V-8 that was only available for the 2022 model year. It calls this engine, which produces 420 hp. and 468 lb-ft of torque, Hurricane Twin Turbo. Performance improves significantly over the 392 hp. and 404 lb-ft of torque. In our testing, it cut more than two seconds off the V-8 Wagoneer’s 0-60 time, dropping it to an impressive 5.5 seconds.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is the only available transmission that can transfer power to a standard rear-wheel drive setup or three available 4WD systems. The base Quadra-Trac I system provides full four-wheel drive and moves torque to the wheel with the most grip. Quadra-Trac II is more advanced and uses a two-speed transfer case to send 100 percent of the torque to one wheel. The Wagoneer Series III comes standard with Quadra-Trac II.
The top 4WD system available on the Wagoneer is the Quadra-Drive II, complete with an electronic rear limited-slip differential and the features included in the Quadra-Trac II. It is available on Wagoneer Series II and III.
