The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee has several good things going for it. It’s comfortable and relatively spacious, offering best-in-class towing and true off-road capability. We also like its well-tuned advanced driver aids that make driving easier and safer.
The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size SUV with two rows of seats. The Grand Cherokee gets a much-needed redesign for the 2022 model year, with styling influenced by its more luxurious sibling, the Grand Wagoneer. The interior has also been redesigned and features Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system, a new digital display, and an optional display for the front passenger.
Rear-wheel drive is standard on some versions, while several all-wheel drive systems are available. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to the wheels. However, it does require unlocking the expensive Trailhawk package for skid plates, tow hooks, and chunky tires that turn the Grand Cherokee into a true four-wheeler.
Inside, the modern cabin is attractively designed, and the standard 8.4-inch touchscreen and optional 10.1-inch setup have a great interface and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless compatibility.
The Level 2 driver assistance system makes for a more relaxed highway ride. However, it could be a more complex setup like General Motors’ Super Cruise. Other standard technologies include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and blind spot monitoring.

2023 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE STYLING & INTERIOR FEATURES
The Grand Cherokee has plenty of room, even if it doesn’t have the largest cabin in the class. The reclining second-row offers comfortable seating for passengers up to 6 feet tall. Unfortunately, the Grand Cherokee rides pretty high, and you’ll need a proper step to get in.
The Grand Cherokee features Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system. It has clear graphics, and an accessible built-in navigation system provides helpful step-by-step instructions. Our test car had a 19-speaker McIntosh surround sound system, and we enjoyed its rich, distortion-free sound.
Smartphone integration comes standard with a ridiculous number of USB ports (we counted 12 in total in our loaded test car). We also like the breadth and functionality of the Grand Cherokee’s suite of advanced driver aids. For example, the adaptive cruise control brakes and accelerates smoothly, and the lane-keeping system works perfectly without too sharp corrections.
The Grand Cherokee features an average amount of cargo space for a mid-size SUV—37.7 cubic feet—behind the second row of seats. (Volkwagen’s Atlas Cross Sport, for example, offers 40.3 cu. in.) The rear seats can also be split and folded for loading larger items. The high load height may be the only obstacle for some people.
There is enough space in the back seat of the car. There is plenty of storage space for small items, with plenty of cup holders and spacious center console drawers in the first and second rows. There are two mounts on the outer seats, easily accessible behind stylish leather flaps.
The Grand Cherokee offers excellent towing capabilities, easily outdoing the competition with a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds with the V6 and 7,200 pounds with the V8.
2023 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SPECS
The Grand Cherokee is available in standard and L, with an extended wheelbase. The former offers five seats, while the L adds a third-row bench seat for seven and slightly more cargo space. All share the same basic styling with an evolutionary look that’s clean, crisp, and should age well, although some rivals may be more exciting to watch.
The 4xe ups the ante by pairing a turbo-4 with electric motors and a large battery pack for 375 horsepower and up to 25 miles of all-electric driving before the gas engine kicks in. Under the hood, a 293-hp 3.6-liter V-6 is standard, while some trims offer a more muscular (but thirstier) 5.7-liter V-8. Other versions are thirstier, so count around 21 mpg with the V-6 and just 17 mpg with the V-8.
